Amritsar Bus Rapid Transit System (Amritsar BRTS) is the bus rapid transit (BRT) system under construction in Amritsar, Punjab, India.[5] BRTS had to start operation in December 2015.[6] The project was commenced on 19 September 2013.[7] Amritsar BRTS is based on Ahmedabad BRTS model.[8] The BRTS will operate with 93 Air-conditioned buses.[3] This project would allow easy travel to different places in city like the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Guru Nanak Dev University and Khalsa College.[9][10] Amritsar BRTS is constructed on the lines of Metrobus (Istanbul).[11] Volvo Buses showed its interest in BRTS project at the holy city of Amritsar.[12]
Key features
Some of the key features of Amritsar BRTS are:[13]
- Automatic Doors of waiting rooms for passengers safety.
- Overheard bridges for pedestrians
- Two different lanes for movement of buses in both directions.
- Intersections will act as boarding place for the buses.
- Complete Air conditioned buses and stations.
Corridors
There will be 7 Corridors for Amritsar BRTS.[14]
- Sham Singh Attari Wala gate and Bhandari Bridge[15] to India Gate
- Bhandari Bridge to Daburji[16]
- Daburji Byepass to Verka
- Verka to Celebration Mall[17]
- Celebration Mall to Sant Singh Sukha Singh Chowk
- 4S Chowk to Kitchlu Chowk
- Kitchlu Chowk to Old Sadar Police Station
Construction
Varaha Infra Ltd a company based in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) is executing this project. Construction work started on 26 February 2015. As of September 2016 , 90% of work has been completed.[18]
